The Cybercab returned 165 watt-hours per mile in EPA testing, the lowest figure the agency has on record for a production vehicle.

Filings approved May 26 put curb weight at 3,113 pounds, battery capacity at 47.6 kilowatt-hours, and power at 219 horsepower through a single front motor. Unadjusted combined range was 418 miles. Apply the EPA's usual correction and the number comes out near 293 miles.

Front-wheel drive is a first for a Tesla production car. So is a cab this light. A Model 3 Standard Range sits closer to 3,860 pounds. The Cybercab drops seats, a wheel, pedals, and about 12 kilowatt-hours of pack.

Efficiency is the hardware half of Keeney's fare story. A car that sips energy, and is built to run more than 100,000 miles a year, is how 25-cent miles become a forecast instead of a slogan.

The certificate covers emissions, not autonomy. Introduction into commerce was listed as May 29.
