A Million Empty Seats: Robotaxi Hits Unsupervised Mile Mark

Ashok Elluswamy told the Austin launch that the fleet had reached one million unsupervised miles, up from 380,000 in late July.

Tesla's robotaxi fleet has driven one million miles with no one supervising the car, the company said at its Austin Cybercab event last week.

"I'm happy to announce that we have achieved 1 million miles of unsupervised Robotaxi operation," Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's vice president of AI, told the room.

The last official total was 380,000 miles, given on the second-quarter call on July 22. The new figure implies about 620,000 miles added in six weeks.

Almost none of those miles were Cybercab miles. About 45 purpose-built cabs were registered in Texas at launch, against hundreds of Model Y robotaxis. Cybercab entered paid service the day of the announcement.

Unsupervised here has a map. It covers driverless Model Ys in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, and in Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. It does not cover the Bay Area service, where a safety driver still sits in the seat.

Waymo had logged on the order of 220 million fully autonomous miles by the spring. Tesla's million is a different scale. It is also the first time the company's unsupervised counter has moved this fast.
