North to Alaska: Tesla's Cybercab Spotted at a Fairbanks Stoplight as Winter Closes In

A gold Cybercab was photographed waiting at a red light on College Road in Fairbanks on Monday, months after Tesla showed the robotaxi running on Alaska snow.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A Tesla Cybercab has turned up in Fairbanks. A gold two-seater was photographed on Monday afternoon waiting at a red light on College Road, with bare birch trees, fallen leaves and a heavy grey sky around it. An Alaska-based X user, @Guzzak, posted the photo and tagged it as a Cybercab sighting in Fairbanks.

It is not the car's first trip north. In January, Tesla's official account posted "Cybercab winter testing in Alaska," sharing photos from its Robotaxi team that show a frosted gold Cybercab running across packed snow under low winter light. The Robotaxi account captioned the set "We're not in Kansas anymore." Tesla's post has drawn more than 540,000 views.

Tesla has not said why a Cybercab is back in Fairbanks this month, or whether a new round of cold-weather work is under way. The timing fits the calendar, though. Winter comes early to interior Alaska, and the deep cold and short days that follow are the conditions engineers look for when they want to prove a car before it carries riders in snowy places.

Cold weather is a real test for a car built to drive itself. The Cybercab has to find lane markings under snow, keep its cameras clear of ice and frost, and manage battery range and cabin heat with no human driver on hand to step in. Tesla went to Alaska in January to put the car through exactly that.

The sighting comes as the Cybercab scales up far to the south. Tesla says it now has more than 300 Cybercabs serving Austin, eight times as many as a month earlier, and Dallas is next in line for Cybercab rides. Cities further north will one day want proof that the car can handle a real winter. A gold Cybercab at a Fairbanks stoplight in October suggests Tesla intends to have that proof ready.
