Five Hours in Cybercab: Sawyer Merritt Sends Tesla a Rider Wishlist
Six cabin tweaks from a marathon Austin ride - recirculation, a bigger map, a cleaner windshield - and a closing note that the two-seater already feels fantastic.

AUSTIN, Texas - Sawyer Merritt spent five hours in Tesla's Cybercab this weekend and still struggled to fill a complaint card. The list he posted late Saturday on X is short, practical, and framed as praise: six cabin tweaks he would love to see, because the production two-seater already feels like a finished product on Austin streets.
The post is a note-length dispatch from a Tesla-focused reporter who has covered Exclusive Access, public Robotaxi app rides, and the gold coupe's first public week. Merritt's tone matters as much as the bullets. "I had a hard time coming up with a list of things because the team did such a great job thinking through everything before launch," he wrote, before congratulating the whole team and calling Cybercab "a fantastic vehicle and experience."

That framing is the news for a desk watching the first days of public Cybercab hails here. Launch-week coverage has already logged wheelchair-height seats, rare-earth-free motors, cleaning robots, and registry math. Merritt's contribution is different: a long ride in the cabin, logged as a rider, with requests that only show up after traffic, dirt, and a barbecue stop have had time to work on you.
First on his list is manual air recirculation. Stuck behind a large gas truck that was "spewing fumes," he wanted a one-tap recirculation control on the main screen so outside smell stays out of the cabin. Cybercab has no driver to hit a traditional climate button. The phone app and the big cabin display are the cockpit. A recirculation toggle is the kind of small, high-frequency control that turns a robotaxi from impressive to habitual.
Second is a full-screen map. The small navigation inset in the top-right corner is fine for a glance, he said, but five hours of unsupervised routing make a case for expanding the map across the large screen so riders can see the full Cybercab route. Tesla already sells the cabin as a lounge with a theater-size display. Giving that display over to navigation on demand is a natural next step for riders who want to know what the car is doing without digging into the phone.
Third is windshield cleaning on command. A couple of times, Merritt wrote, the glass got dirty enough to notice and the car did not clean it on its own. He does not treat it as a crisis - "not a huge deal" - and he knows Tesla treats many cabin inputs as potential error paths. His suggestion is modest: let the rider trigger a clean, including through Grok voice. In a car with no steering wheel and no pedals, voice and screen are the only hands left.
Fourth is destination editing from the main screen. Today, changing where you are going still leans on the phone app. Merritt wants the large cabin display to own that edit. The ask tracks with how public Robotaxi rides already work in Austin: the phone hails the car, but the time spent inside is measured in glances at the big screen, not at a handset bouncing in a cupholder that does not exist.
Fifth is the most hardware-heavy item, and he flags it as the least realistic: an adjustable bottom seat cushion that can raise the front edge for better under-thigh support, especially for taller riders, and that could lean toward a near zero-gravity posture when the bench is fully reclined. Cybercab's bench is part of the accessibility and simplicity brief. Adding motors and cost is not free. Merritt still files the request because five hours is long enough to feel where the cushion ends.
Sixth is a rear camera view on the main screen, similar to what Cybertruck owners already use. Riders in a wheel-less cabin cannot glance over a shoulder the way a driver would. A rear feed is less about driving and more about situational comfort - seeing what is behind the gold coupe when it slows, yields, or waits at a curb.
None of the six reads like a teardown. They read like product notes from someone who already accepts the car. Merritt closes by saying he cannot wait to show his 76-year-old mother the Cybercab when he takes her to Giga Texas next month for the first time. The line is personal, but it is also operational: the same cabin that took his five-hour loop is the one Tesla wants grandparents and first-time riders to trust without a human up front.
He also did what visitors to this city do when the schedule finally loosens. "Of course I had to stop at Terry Black's while I was in town," he added, attaching a photo from the ride day. The barbecue aside is not a footnote for color alone. It places the feedback in ordinary Austin life - traffic, a dirty windshield, a long sit, a meal - rather than a closed-course demo.
For Tesla, the useful signal is the scarcity of the list. After Exclusive Access, after the public Robotaxi app opened Cybercab rides here, and after a half-day of unsupervised miles, a high-follower Tesla voice is asking for recirculation, a bigger map, a cleaner windshield, on-screen destination edits, a seat tweak, and a rear camera. He is not asking for a steering wheel. He is not asking for a safety driver. He is asking for cabin polish on a vehicle he already calls fantastic.
The desk is filing the wishlist as Saturday-night rider feedback, credited to Sawyer Merritt (@SawyerMerritt), not as a Tesla product roadmap. Feature requests on X are not commitments. They are a record of what a long public ride feels like in the first week the gold two-seater is taking strangers. If the team ships even a few of the screen-side items - recirculation, map expand, washer on command, destination edits, rear camera - Cybercab's cabin will match the compliment Merritt already gave the launch.
